Vieussan
and Mezeilles are in the middle of the most beautiful walking country. Whether
you're looking for a leisurely stroll or a serious full day expedition, there
are wonderful routes
with many spectacular views. Cycles can also be hired in nearby villages.
In the spring, the countryside is covered in flowers; in summer, the scent of wild thyme, rosemary and mint arises underfoot; in the autumn, the changing colours of the landscape are breathtaking and in winter, when most days are still sunny, the crisper air offers a wonderfully invigorating experience.
The area is brilliant for birdwatching: by the river there are kingfishers and golden orioles, while in early summer the sound of nightingales is all around. Eagles and other birds of prey nest in the surrounding hills.

A
favourite walk follows the valley of the Orb from Vieussan to the small village
of Ceps (about 4 km). The path rises to give amazing views of the gorges below.
You can also do a circular variation of this walk with donkeys to carry your children and picnic: L'Ane Bleu provides the donkeys and a programme of walks.
