La Vignasse, Mézeilles
Surrounded
by vines and maquis this wine-making hamlet is in the upper Orb Valley in the
Natural Park of the Haut Languedoc, situated in the Mediterranean foothills
beneath the mountains of the Caroux. Wine from Mézeilles can be found in the
AOC of St. Chinian.
La
Vignasse was probably built 200–300 years ago but the medieval looking arch at
the north of the house makes it appear considerably older. The lane outside is
not really suitable for vehicles. The post woman is the only soul brave enough
to test her skills and visitors will find that the distance to carry things from
their car (30 metres) is a small price to pay for such tranquillity, not to
mention safety for children.
La
Vignasse offers a perfect retreat for those who wish to enjoy an area renowned
for its natural beauty - its spring flora includes a wealth of orchids and Mézeilles
enjoys the benefits of being on a migration route for birds. The Natural Park provides a wide range of opportunities such
as climbing, fishing, horse riding, golf, kayaking, river swimming,
mountain biking and rambling. All river-based activities are at 3 miles'
distance. Thanks to the lack of light pollution the night
sky is a revelation.
